AstroWorld Tragedy: A First Hand Account

1.4kviews

November 5th, a day where Houstonians were expecting to have the best night of their lives, tragically turned into the worst. For those who have never been to Houston, Texas AstroWorld is a yearly festival created by Houston rapper, Travis Scott. It’s a concert featuring him and other big stars to share the stage and give you an amazing show. The Astroworld festival is open to all ages, and it was expected to be as great as the festival was the years prior.

Astroworld Festival Tragedy

That Friday night many people, my best friend included— attended the venue. “ The Vibe was very different, but I was excited regardless.” She stated. Going through the details of her night, wasn’t much different than what she knew would happen until Travis Scott finally arrived on stage. “ The crowd went insane, like crazy as hell.” She informed me that she was close to the front of the stage against the bolted metal guard rails that separated the crowd from the stage. “ I instantly regretted that decision— it was like a tidal wave of people just rushing to the stage almost.”

My next question was what was going through your mind? “ I assumed that sooner or later, it would subside, but it just kept getting tighter and tighter, I was getting pressed in between the bar and God knows how many people.” “ I’m scared as hell by this point.” She replied. Okay, what did you do? “ Honestly, I froze dude. Hearing screaming and people yelling “get off me!” I thought at first “ maybe there was an argument in the crowd— I didn’t fully panic until I heard “ Somebody is dead oh my God!”

“I couldn’t breathe and I knew I had to get out of there and go home.” With her being a mother of two, one could only imagine the horror going through her head.

“I was literally moving inches at a time, and I almost fell until someone grabbed me. Honestly, I was so thankful, there were many men and girls around trying to help people up, and calm others down. Looking down I couldn’t help but notice my foot was inches from someone’s face— it was horrific.”

“ No one was coming to help, there were so many cries for help, it was beyond traumatizing.” I then proceeded to ask her was there anything else you remember seeing.

“ People were chanting stop the show, and it was almost like the music [had] gotten louder. It was so scary, I honestly don’t even remember how I had gotten out of there.”

Thankfully, my friend survived and was able to live and tell her story— though the PTSD she and many others endured will take more than one night to cope with. Rest In Peace to the lives lost during that night, and thank you to all the victims speaking out on the situation.
